ok so i want to use a standard lighted switch with three prongs(earth, load and supply) to run an led. how would i go about it? just earth to ground, load to the led, and supply to any 12v wire? any fuse or anything needed?

your best bet would be to use the right type of switch, it sounds like you are trying to use a toggle switch which will allow you to switch between two sources, however if you have to use THIS switch then just do + side of L.E.D. to +12v source, - side of L.E.D. to any prong other than the middle of the switch, then the other two prongs to chasis ground, this will allow you to switch between grounding the L.E.D. or grounding the ground.

nah its not the kind that lets you switch between two sources. ive got the same kind of switch running my offroad lights and its wired like this: earth to ground, load to a relay, and power to the battery. just seems like it shouldnt be any different wiring an led

Oh alright, I was confused and thought it was a different type, yeah it should be the same, just instead of the relay do the L.E.D., sorry about the confusion

Also make sure you are using a 12volt LED.
