I have a legacy DVD player and when I turn it on I get no color, but if I turn it on or off a few times the color comes on. I'm a bit clueless on this problem. If it matters, I have new RCA jacks and a audiovox a/v switch installed . Can a not so ideal ground connection contribute to this problem.

It could.  Are you also using the correct video standard player and monitor?  i.e. PAL/NTSC?
