I was wondering if the XTC foam baffles used to protect door speakers from water would hurt the midbass if the speaker was designed to be a free air speaker.

Yeah, they could.  I cut a hole in the back of mine.  Allows them to breathe but protects them from any direct drips of water and provides a good cushy surface to mount on.

In general baffles like that tend to limit low frequency response (below about 200 to 250 Hz) but help emphasize mid-range response and presence.  So yes, you could say that in many cases they "hurt the midbass."  It depends on the speaker, of course...

I too have found that they make a free air designed speaked become an enclosed speaker system which limits their cone movement. I cut holes in mine as well and got the speakers moving right again.

I have them behind some Alpine spr-176a's and when I listened to them in the shop they sounded WAY better.  They're being pushed by a PPI pcx-440.  Thanks for the quick responses.
