Ya know what I did with an older Alpine that started skipping and you couldn't turn down the volume without the use of excessive force?  I dropped it on the ground from waist height, picked it up, blew out the dust and gravel, and yelled "Honey, I need to buy a new stereo!"

BTW, I did buy another Alpine.

you describe a "skipping " noise yet say it happens on radio as well.... which leads us to an audio problem more than likely... are you going deck to speakers or through an amp?  it sounds like you may be describing "motorboating " on the output stage which is usually indicative of a pinch or short in the speaker wiring... did you meter all speaker wires at the source ( output stage of deck or amp ) for a short to ground?
