I am going to start my very first Fiberglass project soon.  I am going to make two subwoofer enclosures for my rear doors.  I need you help on the specifics.  I will make a Skeleton like frame out of 3/4" MDF with a solid MDF top and Bottom.  I them plan to "wrap" this frame in Fiberglass.  When it is dry I will sand it smooth and cover it with vinyl to match the factory interior.  I need to know: (1) what kind of Fiberglass to use  (2) how many yards will I need for the two enclosures, each one is 24" wide by 18" tall by 10" thick  (3) How many layers of the cloth will I need to do.  (3) what kind of resin to use.  Any other help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Ray

actually you wont wrap the skeleton in fiberglass persay. You'll want to use fleece, or a fabric simular to it that is both flexable and absorbant, then using resin soak it into the fleece to make your mold shell, then you will layer the fiberglass to that. Anyway, 1)fiberglass mat or cloth will work, you can get it at any homedepot, most walmarts and several auto stores like autozone etc. 2) you'll probably need 3 to 4 packages of glass, probably 2 per enclosure maybe more maybe less depends really on the power of the subs your installing. 3)polyester resin is the most common choice.
Good luck and I hope that helped.

Maybe that's the stuff I used last time.  I usually use grill cloth.  But this last project I tried some super stretchy material that looked like thick nylon material.  Just as a suggestion though, stretch it till it is super tight.  Otherwise it might start to hang down from the weight of the resin.

I'm with defective on the wrapping material. Use plush felt (FishFabric). It's about $3.50/yd at Hobby Lobby or fabric stores.

I'd recommend 2 ounce fiberglass chop mat and polyester resin from US Composites. Get the 435 or B-440. Stay away from the cheap stuff. I tried some and it's terrible. You won't need too many layers of mat if you use the plush felt. Maybe three layers if you make sure to resin both sides of the felt. The mat is 50" wide so you'll want 2-3 yards. You should be able to get away with one gallon of resin on a box that size.

u know what they need is a fabric with fiberglass strands sown into it specifically for modling, so when the initial mold is made it would be the equivilant of a layer of actual glass, only problem with that would be the fabric people would probably charge an arm and a leg for it.
