2001 Suburban Overhead Install

We recently purchased a overhead video system for our 99 Suburban.  Decided to trade up two years and are now in a 2001 with a sunroof.   We purchased a smaller 8" wide screen overhead monitor that has a thin metal mounting plate with it.  Can I still install this unit in the location of the overhead dome lights and not have to worry about the sunroof operation?  Is the 12v power coming to the dome lights sufficient for the monitor or do I need to get back to the fuse box?  I really wanted to do this myself but need some helpfull advice from somebody(s) a bit more familiar with it.  Also, where is the best place to locate the DVD player?  Thanks for you input.

You can install the screen without disruption of the sunroof. There is a steel cross beam running across the truck in between the dome light and the sunroof. Attach the screen's mounting plate to this. Be sure to use short screws or rivets because the beam is very thin and the sunroof's cover slides right over the top of this beam with no clearance. You should only use the existing dome light wiring for any new dome lights in the screen. Install new power and ground wires for the screen. Ground the screen and DVD to a clean and paint free spot on the body such as the kick panel. You can use the thick brown wire for ignition power at the igntion harness. The thick red wire is battery power. Install your own fuses on both lines within a few inches of the ignition harness. Pay close attention when running wires overhead. Insure that the wires run between the headliner and under the sunroof's rails, so wire damage doesn't occur when the sunroof is in motion. The DVD can be mounted in many different spots. Under the rear seats seems to be the most popular spot. In the front of the center console or in the console are also alternatives. Check to see if your DVD can be mounted both horizontally and vertically.sparky
