Hi,

I'm new to car alarms, and I'll be attempting to install a Clifford RSX 3.5 in my acura TL.  I know, people say if you don't know what you're doing, go to a proffesional.  Well, I figure I'll never learn until I try it.  Could I possibly tap a wrong wire, and screw everything up?  Sure, but so could an experienced installer working on a new car.  Anyways...so I'm here trying to learn everything I can before I ruin everyting New to Car Security -- posted image.

First question is about relays.  Do you just wire directly to the relay or do you buy those pigtails that are prewired?  Also, how many relays will I need to make use of all the different options on the clifford?  I know I need one for the trunk release.  What else?

Also, I see all kinds of window roll up modules on ebay.  What's the difference between the cheaper ones and the 530t?

Ok, I'm sure I'll have a lot more questions when I actually get the alarm and see what the wiring looks like.  If anyone has installed one in an Acura TL, and is willing to walk me through all the steps, it would be appreciated New to Car Security -- posted image..  Thanks

A home Link Security is built into the overhead map-light module and can be programmed to operate up to three devices, such as a garage-door opener, home security system or remote lighting system. With an FM-frequency keyless entry security system, you can lock and unlock the doors and trunk using a keyless remote transmitter. Locking the doors activates the security system, and if unauthorized entry is attempted, the alarm system will sound the horn and flash the headlights. A unique transponder embedded in the key, and only the matching key, can start the ignition. Attempts to hotwire, vandalize or bypass this security feature will result in immobilization of the ignition system.  This is information from my TL. If you have like I do a new 2004 TL 42,291.00 after all the pptions that I added. The only thing that I wish I would not have asked for was the Nighthawk Black Perl Color. Looks great just too hot. Don't install an alarm yourself. There are so many things that you can destroy. Also your insurance will not do anything for your car that has been hacked by someone that does not know what they are doing. Or anyone for that fact. That is why Shops have great Insurance. You ask what can you mess up. Well call up your dealer and ask what it would cost you to replace your AirBags on your car. then you think about doing your own instal. Sure I have an Alarm that I just installed on my Car. Remote start, Strobes, Fog Machine. Remote Door Pop, For everything that I added it took me 9 1/2 hours to instal it all. Kept the factory stereo system DVD sound and 8 speaker system. Sure it is stock but it sounds great.  I have been working with Alarms and Stereo for almost 20 years if this was my first time installing anything I would not do it on my NEW TL.

Thanks for telling me how great and expensive your car is.  Anyways, I have 2003 TL.  Instead of telling me I could ruin my airbags, how about telling me how to avoid doing that....

Wow, 9 1/2 hours to install all of that? That makes the 40+ hours I put into installing my basic alarm (not remote start only a couple of otpions)look pitiful!!! And I only own a 98 civic worth 7500 tops. Damn you are more negative then I am!!!
Could you tap into the wrong wire and mess things up, Sure. This is why you use a DMM to check your wires and make sure they are correct.
For relays I use female terminals and personaly hate pigtail harness.
For the window module, personally I would use DEI because I have alot of experience with them and they appear to be good units.
If you have any questions then go ahead and post them. Also read the basics to the left and it will be a good start.

Did you get a 555H for the immobilizer bypass? I'd recommend it over the pieces that require a spare key.
Your car has the same exact wiring as the 98-02 Accords. I probably do at least 10 remote starts on that car a winter, but I rarely do alarms or combo units on them. Its an easy car except for a couple things. You are going to need to run some wires into the drivers door and the other doors if you do window modules. The cheap window modules on eBay suck. They don't usually give you one touch, have reliabilty problems, and usually don't have adjustments for different resistances. If you are going to do windows don't skimp on the cost and get the 530T's. If you don't do the window mods, you will still need to run a wire into the drivers door for the factory alarm disarm wire. Those door boots are tricky for a first timer to run wires.
As far as relays, you don't really need any except for trunk release and one for domelight supervision. I don't like the relay harnesses and only use them on the starter kill. If they were free, I'm sure I would use them more but my shop just wires them up ourselves.
You car is a little difficult to find a good place to hide the alarm brain and to conceal the wires because the area under the dash is real open and everything is easy to get to just by reaching up. Can't remember any good places for the brain but I would look into the center console, below the radio, or maybe under the passenger side of the dash.
I'd also consider adding a piezo siren and a backup battery.

Why in the world would he ruin his airbags? You must be really dumb to do that. Just don't disconnect them or cut the airbag wire. It is also not so hard to distinguish it from others. I don't know what about the Acura, but in my Honda it is inside a black loom wrapped with a yellow tape or whatever that is. The connectors are also yellow. Even a blind man would see that wire.
Trying to install it yourself is a good idea, because I'm sure it won't be the last alarm he (or someone) will have to put into his car. If he needs to do 20 more installs till he dies, think about the money he'll save.

Thanks for all the suggestions and encouragement so far.  I did get a 555h, and I guess I'll go with the 530T instead of the cheaper modules.  A question about running wire into the door.  Whatever is wired inside the door, must come back inside the car.  Can't I just tap the wires inside the car?  Maybe everything will be more clear once I have everything in front of me.   If I have to run wire into the doors, it'll give me an excuse to upgrade my speaker wiring anyways New to Car Security -- posted image..

The wires you need to tap inside the door do not exist inside the car, they don't come out of the door such as the driver's window motor wires.

Ok, I got the alarm, and have been studying the install manual for a bit.  Here's a couple questions.  BTW, this is on a 2003 Acura TL-S.  I'll just go wire by wire.

H1/1 - for optional starter kill relay.  Do I really need this?  With the 555H installed, do I still have some sort of ignition security?

H1/4 - I know I need a relay to change the polarity for the trunk release.  It seems I also need a relay for the dome supervision.  Is this correct?  And what exactly is dome supervision?  Is that the dome light turning on when I disarm?  Since the dome light already turns on when  the doors are unlocked, do I need to hook this up, or will I retain that feature from the factory?

H1/6 - What do I do with this?  Trunk?  What do I hook it up to?

H2 harness - Overall confused.  All I know is the wiring from directwire says factory alarm arm/disarm with lock/unlock, and Disarm No Unlock - BLACK/ red to blue.  What do I need to hook up???  Do I need a relay?

If anyone can answer these questions, it'll be appreciated.  I'll probably start the install next weekend.  thanks!
