8-Ohm Speakers

I know that running speakers with an impedance that is too low for an amplifier is a really bad idea, but what happens if you run speakers that are too high? Specifically I'm wondering if I can run 8-Ohm speakers off my 4-Ohm deck...

You guys must think I'm nuts if you've read all my posts... but hey, doing things the easy way just isnt enough fun!

Look at Ohm's Law:  if you double the ohm resistance, you get half the power to the speaker.  When setting up a car system with higher load impendances, make sure you have enough power output at the amplifier to overcome the high load.  A deck does not have extra power, so in your case it is not a good idea, although you probably won't harm anything.  You just won't have enough volume.Build the box so that it performs well in the worst case scenario and, in return, it will reward you at all times.

He's right (you already knew that).  You're really not going to hurt anything, but you're not going to get the volume you're looking for.  I accidentally wired a couple of 8 ohm subs in series one time (wasn't paying attention).  I had enough amp that I didn't actually realize I had a problem for several weeks.  My amp certainly ran cool! : )
