I have seen in several posts where people have a car computer and a touch screen to control it.  This may sound dumb, but what are the benefits to having a computer in the car?  And just for sh%^ and giggles, how much does it cost to build one?
Eat, Sleep, and Off-Road. Everything else is meaningless details.

Lots of reasons...including:

* gps
* manage mp3s
* have computing power @ your finger tips while driving
* play vids instead of just music
* movies...
* and a host of other reasons...how imaginative are you?
Lots of options:
* http://www.dashpc.com
* Google search

Have fun!!

Many reasons, i agree. Choice over what we have had for the last 6 years being the main reason.

I created a Pentium III Grand AM GTP once...we just used the Micro boards and a lot of ribon cable to mount the various components through out the car...We relocated the Temp controls to the glove box and put a nice 10" LCD in where the temp controls and radio used to be...Computer was mounted in trunk wireless track ball was flushed into ceter console and a wired floppy keyboard was put in center console...Pretty sweet setup...Wireless 802.11b so we could go war riding and log on to other ppls networks for fun...We put an FM Transmitter card into it so at shows we could all tune our cars into the radio station and have the same music playing in our cars...

Took a long damn time but was well worth the effort....
