Is it just me, or has the last coulpe of weeks brought out the special people, you know, the ones that only come out on a full moon.  I'm not talking about the usual group of experts that know better and can install better than you, but they don't have the time or shop (or money) but do have the expertise.  I'm talking about the ones who want to know your qualification, work experience, government qualification, insurance coverage, financial position and want you to sign a document before you install a flashing LED in their car.  Where do they come from???

Hi-lights of the last week.

High dollar professional install done by an "expert",  worked great but suddenly stopped (the expert was to buzzy to fix, he was leaving town).  The wire was run up the firewall, around the windshield whipper, through the hood hinge, in the fender crack and tucked under the weather stripping.  It was very nicely tie wrapped and split loomed.  Did I mention the fuse holder was located in the drainage "tray" that happened to be blocked and only half full of water.  (It had been raining for only a couple of hours)  Surprising enough, this wasn't the problem.  The was an old Lanzar 50 amp powering the system, which has power/ground wire comming out of the amp.  While disconneting the amp ( it was in protection) I found the amp wires butted up against the power wire.  While not everyone has terminal block to make the connection, you could use some sort of connector, baring that at least strip off the insulation and try the wires together.  Once I refilled the amp with smoke, and fixed the pro's install, it worked.

But I' m not sure if thats much better than the guy who came in for an hour and a half each day figuring that the part that he needed would get here faster if he lectured me on how to run a bussieness, instead of letting me get on the phone and chase the part.  After the tenth day, my customer service failed, and I informed him that if he wasn't willing to pay for my trip to Japan to pick up the part, he'd have to wait, and do so without telling me how to run my bussiness.  His radio had not worked for three years, now it was a rush.  When it was fixed, he was beatting on the shop door at 11 pm to have it put back in.  Special, overtime job.

One last piss off, we as pro's need tobe trained, certified, and insured ect.  In the last week, I've seen car come in after being "detailed", 3 alarm remote start systems that were flooded with cleaner/water, two amps, same story, and a navigation system that looked liked it was on the out side of a submarine, not to mention the decks that have cleaners sprayed in them.  Guess anyone with a bucket and sponge can open a detail shop, but they need to be good at avoiding responability and being cheap.  Course then need stuff fixed before then customer find out.  If I really wanted to trade labour, parts and warrenty issues for a car wash, I might as well work out of a dounut shop.  Wish people were more carefull getting their cars clean as they are about putting the stereo's in.

Anyone else having this much fun?

haha pretty funny stories...yea the people that come in and talk to me and can install way better than i can always make me laugh.  heres a pretty funny one for you, well im an installer at HHGregg and i had just finished putting an alarm and remote starter in this guys blazer, which by the way, we sell Code alarm..does anyone else hate them as much as i do?  i miss DEI when i installed for Electronic Express! lol anyway so this kid starts talkin to me and asks if we need another installer..which we do so i was like well, if you know how to install then how come you had me put in your alarm and remote start?  he said he can do anything except security..he says amps, subs, screens, he can fly through them and hes one of the "best" in the biz.  he asks could i give him a shot and train him on security..i said id talk to management and that might be possible.  he offers to show me his system to see what kind of work he is capable of doing.  i was interested until i saw that he has 3 amps in his car, two mtx 2 channel for mids and highs, and an mtx1501D for subs.  he had all 3 amps running from a 4gauge wire to a capacitor!!!  and the best part...the 1501 was run off a 8 gauge power and ground!!!! i told him" yea man ill get in touch with my manager and we'll give you a call".

also we had another car where we had to run new wires for the speakers and they owner told us that we didnt. if they are so pro and knowledgeable why didnt they do it?

most of the bad installs ive been fixing up are coming from best buy and cicuit city. i had a car come in and the screw that was holding down the amp was tapped into the gas tank, so i sent the guy back to best buy so that he could make them liable for the careless install. another car that came in from cicuit city had the power wire from the amp tapped into the fuse block, the remote to the amp was via a toggle switch and not the remote from the head unit. the amp was mounted  upside down under the rear speaker deck, and the rca cables going to the amp were getting their signal from one of the rear speakers instead of using the output of the head unit. what is up with the lazy installs. arent these guys supposed to know what theyre doing. why are they even mecp certified, just because they can memorize a basic install book doesnt make them qualified. right. and dont get me started with this chain that offers installations for a buck, cause i cant type that fast.

Lets be fair now. A chain that big is going to have some bad installers in it due to volume. I have seen plenty of crap from independants before but since you never heard of these stores, even if I tell you the name you will forget. But If I say that I had a bad install at Best Buy or Circut city, you will think to yourself, I have heard of bad installs from them before, they must be a bunch of hacks. A bad installer or install manager can completly mold the reputation of and shop because a person who gets a job done well will tell 3 people but one who gets a bad job will tell 10.

HHHAAAAA!!!!  This is a sweet thread!  I had a guy come in a 90 Coupe Deville, his factory deck had been jacked about 18 months ago, and he was finally putting in a cassette(???) player, and asked if I could guide him on the wires, and to make sure I told him how the A/C and park lites are wired through the factory deck, so that he can hook them up the same on his new one.  I looked at him as though he had just told me that water isn't wet, and asked "How do you figure your A/C and park lites are wired through the deck?"  He replied, "If I dont hook certain wires together, that used to go to the deck, they dont work," in a "you're dumber then I look" voice.  So I said lets look at it.  He says "You want me to roll it into the bay?"  Nah, I'll do this in the street.  Really, along the curb.  I wasn't about to move the box and other stuff I was building at the time.  Anywho, I look at the wiring, and there is a 10 ga red power wire coming from the fuse box, and a 16 ga speaker wire going out under the hood somewhere(this one powered the A/C, I believe it was hooke to the ign wire).  And in order for the park lites and dash lites to work, he had to hook the Illumination wire up to the red power wire as well(I figured fuse was blown when jacked, and now they were being powered backwards from Ill. wire).  So I explained that these wires are not what is supposed to be there, but I can fix most of it really easily.  He asks if it is going to take all day and if he should leave it and come back for it later.  I tell him to wait thirty seconds, and run inside and grab a wiring sheet for standard GM, and a handful of fuses.  Go out, replace dash lite/park lite fuse, Acc fuse, and a couple of others just to be proper, hand him the sheet, and say "the speaker wire needs to hook to the yellow Acc wire, the big red one is 12v constant, and this paper explains the rest.  There are two yellow wires, turn key on, and check them with a tester, one will have 12v and the other will not.  The one without is the speaker lead.  Now get this piece of crap outta my sight!"  And turned and walked back inside.  The only thing I regret is I gave him my favorite wiring sheet.  Oh well, a small price to pay to keep me from having to hide a body.
If it don't fit, Force it.
If it breaks, You needed a new one anyway!
