I have a 1999 S-10 Extreme pickup when you release the ignition switch you immediately goes dead.

I have changed fuel filter, checked fuel pressure (60-70 psi), and ignition (ground a spark plug lead and it fires). I have talked with several people that say it is the fuel pump. This is a expensive experiment. This has been going on for about a year, but now it want crank at all.

Can you please help me.

Try re-phrasing what you are trying to say. What goes dead and when? A good description of the problem and the conditions will help diagnois the problem.

Have you changed distributor cap & rotor lately? I had a 97 s10 with a similar problem.It turned out to be a hair line crack in the distributor. Also does your check engine light stay on ( that is before your engine totally quit running). Try doing a full tune up before buying a fuel pump. Like you said they are not cheap. I checked the price for mine & it was around $400. Not to mention you have to drop the tank to get to it.

Your description is kinda sketchy man, but lets try and narrow this down.

1) You have spark on every cyclinder ? Correct ? Easy way to test pull the spark plug wire and get someone to hold it with in about a inch of the plug while cranking.

2) You have fuel pressure 70 psi, so the fuel pump is ok

3) Does the starter crank ? Check the wires on your starter make sure that they are not loose or corroded.

4) How is your battery voltage ?

hi try holding the ign just past the ign point almost at start but not so far as to let starter crank after the truck started see if it stays runing it may take a couple of try's until you get it to get at the right point it sounds like ign switch is screwed had a acura that you had to start then hold ign just past the ign portion if you let it spring back to ign from start it would die

sorry guys i just had to say i almost pissed my pants when i read the original post. Because if you immediately go dead when you release the ignition switch... man you really got a problem.

Thanks for your replys to my problem on the S-10 truck. We got the truck fixed this weekend. Talked to several more guys and tried a throttle position sensor (TPS) and it work.
