Here is the case, I recently bought one of the infinity kappa component speaker set with an alpine(mrv-f340)amp powering them and my rear 6x9s, and here is the spec of the speaker and amp.  The thing is on the amp, theres filter setting hp/lp/off(full range) with xover freq setting from 30hz-400hz for both front and rear channels.  I first set them on hp for both front and rear, but felt there's like only little bass.  Then, someone told me by setting both channels to hp there shouldn't have any bass because the lows are blocked out by the hp filter.  So, I listen what he taught me on setting both to off(full range) with tuning the xover freq setting to about 80-100hz, and I do get a better bass for them.  So far I know LP is used for sub, so I shouldnt mess with it since no sub yet.  My question is will the "off" filter setting be proper for both my front/rear speakers(6x9 is 3 ways so I guess it's ok on full range, but what about the front component set?).  Moreover, I am confused by many people's saying about the filter, Some told me when I set to hp, I tune those freq xover setting to about 80hz while some others told me either put the filter on hp or lp, the xover freq setting knob will not be working since the highs and lows are already being blocked out by the filter and only can be tuned when the filter is off.  I want to know the correct concept about those filter/xover freq setting on my amp and the proper setting for the speakers to get enough bass with mid/highs.  Sorry about writing this much since I just entered in the car audio world and did the installation.

Thank you for your time, and I appreciate it.

HP = high pass, frequencies below the setting are blocked at 12db per octave.

LP = low pass, frequencies above the setting are blocked at 12 db per octave.

Off = full range, no filter is engaged at all and the adjustments have no effect.

I suggest you start by turning the filter off for your 6X9s and set it to HP and about 80Hz for the components.  Adjust to suit your ears; and if "full range" on both sets sounds best to you, leave it there.  And of course, I assume you have hooked up the passive crossovers that came with your components?

so when setting filter at off, the xover freq setting knob adjument is not working there? and yes I have hook up the crossovers came with the components right below my amp hook in trunk.  Also, will the filter and xover freq setting blows my speakers?

That is correct.

The filter and xover setting on the amp will have nothing to do with "blowing" your speakers.  It's watts and distortion that blow speakers.  Setting your input gain properly is much more important that your xover settings.  Do a search in this forum for "setting gain" or go to www.bcae1.com and search there if you do not know how to set gains.

Do you like to listen to your music as loud as possible? or at a moderate level with a good bottom end?  How you listen to your music will help determine your crossover settings.  If you like to get every once of volume out of your speakers, then applying a high pass will help you get that.  If you listen at moderated levels then I would leave them both off for a fuller sound.

I know someone who listens to crap like Doken and Stryper with the crossovers turn on in there Camero and set at 100hz, its all blaring treble and mid-range.  No sub in this system.  I cannot figure this out.  *rolls eyes*.  They love it.  If you turn it off he says, "fix it, this is crap, i want a loud system".  Some sort of undiagnosed mental retardation going on there.....

Definitly moderated levels with very clean mids/highs/lows.  I like it when the music is grabing my attention with very precisely highs, mids, lows on every tones coming out of the speakers, definitely a comfort there!  The  music before setting at HP definitely got my attention on mid/highs, but lows is just not enough there, so I would want to leave both filter for front/rear at off since I don't have a sub giving me good matching lows with mid/highs, and fortunately the off on filter don't tend to blow my speaker.  Tks alot guys, those information surely helped me out about the tuning!
