Could someone please show me how to wire up a pushbutton switch for my starter. I have a relay and a momentary switch, but I have no idea how to use the relay.
My ignition switch is so worn out it will not go to the "start" position, but it will switch on the ignition etc, so to save a couple hundred bucks I figured I would just put in a start button>
Thanks in advance and I apologise if this topic is a frequent one, I did read 14 pages and could not find the info I am after.
Jeremy.

What Kind of Car?

Will you be able to turn the key to the on position or not?

What kind of Starter do you have?

[1] Built in Solenoid

[2] External Solenoid

Thanks for the replies.
In answer to the question
- I can turn the ignition to on, the start function does not operate. This also unlocks the steering.
- The car is an old 318i BMW. 1984.
- It has an external solenoid
I would also like the pushbutton switch to be inoperable after the car has started. To reingage the start button it should be necessary to turn off the ingnition and then turn it on again. This is a std safety feature that is built into the ignition switch, but the diagram above would allow me to be able to ingage the starter any time the ignition is on, even when the car is already running.
Thanks again.

Can you find a 12v power source that is only available when the Car is running.

Measure the volts to the Coil or the voltage Regulator input and see how many volts we are dealing with. It could be 24vac instead of 12vdc. If you can find a power source we can add an extra relay to disable the push button.

Although I don't have your Answer right now, I have been serching the web for any details about your wiring that I could. I came across some info that may be useful to you. I thought you may want to take a look at the treasures that I found on your car.

I have a question regarding adding another route to the starter for a 1992 Suzuki Swift 1.3 DOHC GT model. The MK2 model had some engineering flaw with the ignition switch, cooper plates that were made too soft. Over a given period of time, the point would become worn down and contact or voltage would drop below the tollerance level to send power to the solenoid. Now it is doing the 'clicky click' from time-to-time. I want to add a relay or another route for power source to the solenoid by using a relay. is the first diagram ok for this car? I still want to use the key or ignition.

I have a external solenoid
