I have come to the conclusion that my soldering abilities...well..suck. Which often makes me result to wire taps... Soldering Tutorial - Last Post -- posted image.

The bottom line is that you need to practice. Everyone learns by doing.

Just practice, and do it on sample parts, prior to working on mission critical parts.

Even if you are good you need to practice or you forget. A sticky on soldering and connections in general would be nice. I bought a bunch of those stupid plastic connectors that you crimp and they are pretty suspect or i don't know how to crimp. Everyone seems to have a different method for soldering.

Stripping insulation also seems to be a problem. The large strippers are awkward. I bought a small stripper and it works good but it can only be used on small wires. I guess I should try razor blades.

The auto strippers a great guys. Grabs the wire and strips the end in one motion. Buy quality and you will be happy. Those of you who said practice are absolutely right. I get better and better the more I do. One trick I have learned to make a nice tight connection is to take a single strand of wire and wrap it around the two wire that are to be joined to help hold the ends together nice and tight. Then you are free with both hands to solder when ready.
