how do i test a sub with a multimeter to see if one of the voice coils are bad? i figure its probably by testing the resistance through it..but wanna be sure.

Yes, you test the resistance. Depending on the DCR of the sub, you probably would expect to see around 3.2 ohms for a 4 ohm driver.
