Anyone know if on a 01' grand prix the factory head unit has to stay installed or can it be removed and replaced with an after market unit without keeping the original installed ?

U can replace Factory Radio

Use the Metra Kit # 99-4000 and wire adapter # 70-1858 and Antenna adapter # 40-GM10

To keep all the factory features that run through the factory radio now, you will have to relocate the fact. deck. For a 01 GM vehicle, it will more than likely be the case, although different GM vehicles have different funstions running through the fact. unit. Some cars will lose more features then others. The obvious thing you will lose is your door chime. If the door chime is coming through your front left passenger speaker, that means you have one a radio that should be relocated so you wont lose any features.

I got all of those at my local Best Buy. Also, pretty much any store that does stereo installation should carry those parts. You may find a place to get them cheaper, or you can order online from the various online stores.
