i'm designing my system still as i said in a previous post, i've got the head unit figured out, the interior speakers are all checked, i'm down to what subs and i'm torn between a couple.  I'm looking at alpine type r's or diamond audio subs which one will give me a nice balance of spl and sq? i'm looking to run a medium/large sealed box based on the subs ratings for airspace, i've got the room and i'm planning to run 1 or 2 15s the amp i pick up will handle the rms no problems there just need some opinions on the subs :).

well i was using the idea that cone area equals spl, when the alpine 12s only offer alittle over 400 sq inch of cone area and the 15s offer over 700 i would barely be equaling that with 2 12s, but i also tend to listen to metal/ techno, industrial stuff with fast beats and complicated drum/bass lines so i was trying to find a high end 15, but i could run a couple 12s :) i'm trying not to spend more than about 300 for a sub so i limited myself down a hair and was going to sink all the cash into one sub putting out good power, but i really like the alpines, eclipse is also a good brand but no local dealers around here.

Look, if your serious about getting a SPL/SQ mix, go with 12's.  And I've heard 145 db cars, who could possilbe not call that loud?  Damn loud, not down the block loud, but in the car - plenty loud.  Sounds to me like your just interested in being loud though, so go get your 15's.

loud yes, annoying the neighbors 3 blocks away no, regardless of sizes, since i was looking at 12s and 15s anyway, back to brands, alpine type r's diamond audio their higher end subs, which will give me a better mix as thats about all i have access to around here, the only other shops in town sell clarion and audiobahn egh.

well honestly I have loved my eclipse's and jl products,   And 9 out of 10 times I run 10's because I listen from rap to clasic rock to metal.   So i need something to hit hard have a far excursion and have tight bass...about any 15 is lacking in the tight bass catagory and some 12's have been alright..Ifv anything I would go alpine, But I wasent nearly as happy with the alpie type r as with a jl w6v2 or w3v2 nor as happy with the type r as with my eclipse subs

I was going to recommend a w3v2 or w6v2, but I hate to be seen as someone who rides the dick on JL Audio stuff.  But who could argue with Eclipse subs?  Ok, im sure someone would spew off something; nevermind though, I like Eclipse and Infinity Kappa perfect as a alternative to JL.

Eclipse subs spl question -- posted image. A damn fine mix of sq and spl. SPL that can infact be heard down the block but in the car as a daily driver you can actually listen to as well.
