I have an old school 1800W Colossus amp made by Hifonics. (I think thats the right specs its from around 1995). What was the quality of that amp? I am 90% sure I am going to go with 4 10" IDQ DVC subs. Will that amp push them and produce quality sound, or is that amp old and out of date? Do I need a new amp?

Hell I had sold 2 of those to various customers.That amp is 1800 w into a 4 ohm mono,or stereo 600 w @ 4 or 900 w@2.I don't have any idea what kind of subs you are using.Good luck.

The quality back then for Hifonics amps was very good, can't say the same for todays stuff. I only heard 1 of the Colossus installed in a car before, and it was very impressive. If nothing is wrong with the amp, I would say use it. You probably will need a HO alternator though.

Hifonics Series 7 and 8 were as good or better than 90%of the crap for sale today. No failures, Rock Solid. If you can supply enough current and voltage that amp will deliver. Don't go below 2 ohms stereo and you will be fine. Good Luck!

cool so Ill run 4 Image dynamics with it no problems. (250/500 RMS each) That saves me a few dollars. Now All I have to do is buy the 4 IDQ subs and new wiring and Ive got my new system ready for install this winter!!! So the final outcome is....

MD130 Dynaudio (upgraded) Tweeter (not the 1" model, this guy is big)

MD160 Dynaudio 6.5" Midbass (sealed in .5 F^3 Fiber Glass kickpannels)

MD170 Dynaudio 8" woofer in a .8 f^3 sealed box in my doors

TRI-amp'd with 4x70w and 2x120w Monitor 1 amps (made by zapco guy under arc audio. God I hope they are tight)

4 Image Dynamics IDQ subs in .68 sealed enclousures (for each 10)

1800w colosus amp for the 10's

X-over and 28band EQ for each channel independantly with old school Rockford Fosgate Symmetry. Including Balanced lines from the head unit (Zapco line drivers that work with the symmetry)

Head unit is the mid 90's Clarion Dual 24 bit Burr-Brown Dac unit. (awesome SQ)

I can't wait to hear it all, I will buy the subs and pretty wires this weekend and start building. My bud is painting my mustang in 2 weeks so Ill get him to do some of the interior too and hit the colosus amp with some paint. this wont be the loudest Ive built but it should be one of the best sounding systems Ive ever heard!!! Can you tell Im excited. Thanks to evereyone here who helped recomend the components and answered all of my questions! Ill send pics of the entire install, Ill have it ready by SUMMER!

well, Image dynamics talked me out of the 4 10" ID's and told me to go 4 12" ID V.3 infinite baffel in the trunk. The colosus ends up being a series VII so it puts out 1800x1 bridged at 4 ohms. The THD on this 1800w class AB amp is .02  DAMN! Not many 1800 watt amps today can say they are that tight.

That's a "REAL" 1800 watts. Not I.L.S.   (If Lightning Strikes)
