Tach wire question

I hope this isn't a stupid question but why does a tach wire have AC voltage when the rest of the car is DC? How does it generate AC voltage?

The alternator gets its name from the fact that it generates alternating current (AC). The old generators I mentioned before generated direct current (DC). Well the battery can't use alternating current so the alternator output is fed into what are called diodes, which convert the AC into DC. because the tach wires uses higher amperage....kinda like the spark plug wire..if you touch the spark plug, it will pretty much knock the crap out of you....yet the radio hot wire wont........Good Luck
