I'm looking for a way to power a 12v DC car audio amp with your typical household AC current. I was thinking of buying a cheap automotive battery charger and using it to power my amp. is there any reason not to do this? will it even work? if it won't, is there another way to power 12 volt dc electronics with household AC that is affordable to your average college student?

What I've done in the past was a 12v car battery and a battery charger.. put the battery in a plastic battery box and watch for acid spills.. or use a sealed battery.

ummmmm..... you can't use a 12 volt charger alone.

A battery charger will charge your battery using a series pulses it is not a constnt 12v supply although it seems like it, the other problem is a battery charger can handle about 4 amps...10 if yougot a good one, only litle power amps draw lees then 10 amps, meaning you will have severe lack of power, and will most likely cause damage to your charger

Using a charger and a battery will work but bear in mind that you are still taking more from the battery then what the charger can put back into battery, so henceforth you will still end up with a flat battery.
