About 3 months ago I installed a pair of Infinity Kappa 6.5" components in my front doors. They sound ok, but I expected them to sound better. They have good bass response but when I turn up the volume on my alpine deck to 20 (max 30) the highs sound distorted. I have a friend who has pioneer 3 way coaxial speakers and I think his sounds better at higher volume (also has an alpine deck).

Is there something wrong with my componets or do coaxial have cleaner sounding highs than componets?

PS: I am interested in clean sounding mids and highs that can play at high volume and am considering switch from infinity components to infinity coaxials.

I doubt there is anything wrong with your speakers. Sounds like you have discovered the point of noticable distortion on your head unit. Different speakers will reveal this at different levels. If you want it cleaner/louder, an external amplifier is the only answer.

This is why I always try to recommend a 4 channel amp when powering components, the power from a head unit is so small it is hard to push a decent set of components. A 50x4 amp will blow away a head unit any day no matter what make or brand head unit

Does the distortion become noticable at different volumes between cd and fm?

OK, in my opinion you made a serious mistake buying components if you are only running them off a deck. Its kinda like buying a porshe to drive 30 kph to church every sunday. Totally unnessasary and nopt in your best intrest. Those speaker are not gonna be happy with the power provided from a deck. i think I would be looking at a set of coaxials with less power requirements

dmangru01, I know that you are on a budget and don't want an external amplifier but it seems that you want nice sound from your speakers. I personally think that you should go with an inexpensive 4 channel amp. This would make your speakers sound much cleaner and give you the extra thump and clarity that you are looking for. Also, it will cost about the same as getting a new set of coax and tweeters.
