My gf drives a 99 Corolla, which pretty much makes it my car to play with. I have put an alarm into it, so I pretty much know it inside and out.

These guys are right in that the car does have 2 different parking light wires. One is positive, and the other negative. BOTH can be found at the bottom of the fuse box. I know one says steering column, but it's easier to just catch either one in at the bottom of the fuse box.

If your alarm just uses the parking lights for flashing on/off at arm/disarm, or just for full alarm panic mode, then either one will do. If your alarm has control of the lights at night (as in automatic parking and head lights), then I would use the negative. When you use the negative, you trigger the parking light relay, and you can see the slightly higher voltage, resulting in slightly brighter parking lamps and dash lights. But that is just me being anal.

Finally, take the white wires from your alarm. Hook up a meter, probe, or whatever you use to check polarity. Arm/Disarm the alarm. Send the alarm in panic mode. See if the white wires are outputing a signal when they are supposed to be. With this test, you can also see the polarity (positive or negative) that the alarm is putting out.

i think that you are asking " what are the parking lights" meaning what makes them different from the headlights? i think thats what you are trying to ask?  im assumming you are hooking up a remote start or an alarm. if so, its the first position on the headlight switch. its the yellow lights that light up in the front of the car that stay on steady. sometimes they act as the directional lights as well. if you are looking for it, in that car, go to the bottom of the fuse box, and its the green wire that shows positive voltage when you click the headlight switch to the first position. if the parking light output of your alarm or remote is negative, then use the light GREEN/ black wire in the steering column. let me know if you need more info,

okay... so I metered some wires.... here's what I found

the white wires from the control unit have no voltage to them what so ever even when the alarm is activated... so I asked myself... what am I missing.  I saw that I havn't hooked up the headlight-on warning wire (RED / black) from the alarm.   so I tied that wire high (12v) and found that the white wires now read 12v as well?.... I"m guessing the headlight on warning wire has to be connected for the parking light wires to work from the control unit.

does this sound right?

also... can anyone tell me where and what color the headlight on warning wire is?

thanks so much guys

First off, you still have not identified the proper parking light wire off the Corolla. I wrote before on page 1:

You probably didn't grab the proper wire. Did you test any of the wires you grabbed ? Make sure that you meter the wires before testing for the (+) GREEN wire. Place a jumper from 12 volt constant to the GREEN wire at the bottom of the fuse box and this will turn on your parking lights. Make sure you test this wire prior to ensure that the meter is giving you 12 volts when you turn on the lights and 0 when you turn them off.

You will need to meter the proper wire and hook up th WHITE wire to the parkign light wire that you find. To turn on your parking lights, all you have to do is turn the light switch one turn until your gauge lights turn on and all 4 corner lights will be on as well. The target wire will have 12 volts on it when this happens.

oh no man... I already did that... I found the right wires... and metered them.... the problem is that I metered the white wires... and they dont' change when putting the car in panic... or locking or anything.... they only change when I hook up the wire labeled "headlight on warning" by the alarm manufacturor.

I'm thinking that if I hook up that wire... then those white wires will actually change in voltage when using the alarm.

?? thanks for checking back... any light on this?

 HEADLIGHTS|RED / white           |-  |steering column

This wire is a (-) trigger for a relay that turns on the headlights.

thanks.... so I should connect the wire labeled "headlight on warning" just up to the headlight switch?

I'm just a little confused I guess?
