I have replaced my factory Delco h/u with an alpine cd shuttle using a metra wiring harnes. The h/u powers up, but there is no sound do I need to by the factory amp and direct wire the speakers?

Almost certainly-- sending speaker level into factory amps tends to make for pretty bad sound.
However, you're more likely to get an answer from someone who knows that sound system well if you post in car audio.

if you havent already done so, try hooking up the blue power ant. wire from the metra harness to the blue/white amp turn on wire from the after market head unit.
