I'm looking into getting a high output alternator, but I have some questions. I have a '96 yukon with a 105 amp stock alternator, about 600W RMS in amps, and have plans for some offroad lights in the grill gaurd. Any clue as to what size alternator I should look at? Right now the alternator is feeling the load, no large voltage drops but there is some fluctuation on the voltmeter. Anyway, 135a, 160, 200amp ? Also do I need to replace a lot of the components such as battery etc if I upgrade the alternator?

That does not seem like a lot of a load for that 105 I would check my grounds and upgrade your battery to the yellow top deepcycle battery it will help out your rig all around, but If you insist on getting a ho alt go with atleast a 200 amp, for upgrades to audio later on

If you can, get the maximum amps from the start. Most people are never pleased with their system a few months after they put it in. Then they want to upgrade. Then the stuff they bought will be up for sale. So if you start out with a strong alternator, you can go bigger and better later without having to worry about that part of your system.

A high output alternator will require upgrading the cable from alternator to battery, as well as your ground cable.

I got a 180 amp cs130d (same housing as the original 105 amp unit) for my 97 suburban.

If you really want heavy duty, go for the 144 (larger housing + internals) and it requires a slightly longer belt.

i have a 2001 tahoe, i just actually ordered a 300amp alt for it. i am going to run it parrarllel with my stock alt.

the 300 amp was only like $150 more than the 200amp. if u can find a good deal just go with the bigest u can find.

also later on when u sell the truck u can always sell the bigger alt easier because not that many exist. usually it has to be custom made.

goodluck

Yeah, them mud flaps and steps must pull 10+ amps each (at least). And the bug shield - ouch, that's gonna hurt. hehe j/k ya, couldn't resist HO Alternator -- posted image.

Hey thanks for the replies. The reason I am looking to replace my alt now is because my voltage is at about 15.2V when I start my truck and 10 mins later is at about 13-14.2. I dont get any big fluctuations on a bass hit, and I checked my grounds so I'm thinking that it's the alternator or battery. The alt. is a reman and the batt. is in question at this point. I upgraded the big 3 and the only difference it made was the voltage being at 15.2 or so at start up. After a few mins it drops right back down. Not a HUGE thing but I'm a perfectionist and it bothers me when something isn't right. Thanks again for the advice........
