Remote starter season is officialy here and after a few frosty days we are quite busy to say the least. I need some advice on managing my customers.
Do I make appointments and take a deposit? or do I take them as I go? Until now I've been doing the latter but it's starting to catch up with me. Although taking a deposit with appointments seems like the best way to go, I'd be curious to hear what some other shops do.
I'd also like to know how I can avoid keeping my guys after hours even when things are busy. Do any shops ask customers to leave their cars overnight?

I have customers leave cars all the time. I don't mind staying late to do installs but my installer I hired doesn't stay. We have been doing about 4-5 remotestart a day here lately along with a few radios, speakers and a box here and there.I don't ask for the customer to put a deposit down most of the time but I may have to start, because we have been getting alot of no shows where we could fit somebody in.

What I usually do is make the appointments for ALL customer's prior to the day and get all of them to leave the vehicles at the shop for the entire day starting at 8:30 am . This way we can have our pick of the car's and do the easy ones first and prep the harder ones for the afternoon. If I get a walk in during the day I can at least do it quickly or get them to bring it back another day where the day isn't so busy.

I don't ask for a deposit as I have never had a person not come in for an appointment and if they don't come in for the schedules appointment they usually call ahead to let me know. Most people who want a remote starter installed won't piss off the installer or shop installing it, that's just bad karma.

Appointments are great..tell them that they should let you know before time if they are going to be late or they will be pushed to the end of the line.

as a rule we dont book appointments... it's first come, first served... we start stacking jobs at 8:30 in the morning and work on them all in the order they were dropped off....

in the cases where we do make appointments the customers have to have bought and paid for the product in advance and then we will book him/her a specific appointment... this prevents them from shopping elsewhere and being a no show on the day you booked them in.....

this time of year we only take appointment with a deposit. $20 says they are serious.

I do between 5-8 starts a day. One preping disassemble, mount pin switch, mount ant and check list. I do all the "surgery" and the prep person reassembles. Maximizing the time and ablities of both people.

we tell them to drop their car off on a day, not at a time.....  i've been doing "first come, first served" for about 15 years now..... and it works great, the people who make the effort to show up, get served.... after 10 years of making appointments only to have people not show up or show up an hour late ( and then your guys sit and do nothing ) or booking a job for 11 am only to find out that you are having problems with the job you started at 8:30 and you dont begin the 11 am job till 12:30 and then every other "appointment" of the day is behind and you have a bunch of pi**ed off people, i found that not making appointments for a "specific time" works best for us

some mornings i have 3 or 4 guys here waiting when i open at 8:30.. all wanting to be the first job of the day, but they all get done and we dont worry at all about people who dont show up... or show up an hour or more later than they were supposed to.....

Thank you everybody for your input. Now I see that there is no solid answer to my question. Until now we've been doing first come first serve. Lately though it's been really busy and not all my customers can bring their car when we open. I found I was turning away a lot of business so I'm trying appointments now.
