No I haven't really done anything to it , nothing that would affect that anyway, I have just taken the lights out for the time being..

Reverse lights will be controlled by a switch that recognizes whether the car is in reverse or not, but not by the headlights. 87 GMC? Most likely an automatic? Check in the steering column for starters. Possibility of pinched wire gounding out? Do they come on with ign/acc or stay on all of the time?

I think the switch will be located on the tranny (a 700r4 if it's an 87, You should be able to get the wire color at the tail light and trace it to the tranny. I could be wrong but I think it is just a 2 wire plug on the driver side. pull the plug thenpull the switch. this is real common on the old chevs.... most guys will just clip the wires at the tail lights and fix it that way... the rev lights arn't to bright anyway....

My truck is an 87 with what I think is a th400 tranny and yes I am thinking that it is something in the steering colum because some times when I go into 1st gear the windsheild wipers come on.. I just took out the reverse lights, it's not like they do much anyways.. ecspecially when you have a lift and tires on your truck, you don't see much..
