I was reading another thread about how far a tweeter is supposed to be placed from the mid and it ranged from 1" to 7". I have a 2000 Landrover Discovery which has a 3-way set up front with a 6.5 low in the door, 3" high in the door, and a 1" tweet 1/3 of the way up a pillar. I was thinking of replacing with the 6.5" XXX set and using the a pillar placement for the tweet and building a fiberglass enclosure in the bottom of the door for the mid. I'm not going to be competing in comps, but I don't want it to sound like arse either. Would it sound any better if I put the tweets where the 3" is now. It's about 14-15" above the mid. I would keep it as close to the midrange driver as possible if you are concerned about sound quality.

if you still want to put it in the a piller, make sure you reverse the phase of the tweeters so there will be a 3ms delay or so. will help with sq in regards to timing a bit if the tweeter is much more close to your ear than the mid. i was working on a 96 discovery and there was quit a bit of room behind the 3". it would sound pretty good if you put the mid there. the best spot of course would be in a kick panel

Although possible, I highly doubt that switching the polarity on the tweeter will help that problem. The problem isn't necessarily phase, but overlap. Basically the tweeter and midrange are playing the same frequencies over a short bandwidth at the crossover frequency. The shallower the slope, the more of the same frequencies they play. The more you seperate the speakers, the more of a dip you get at the crossover point (and other points as well due to comb filtering). And this gets worse the more off axis the speakers are to the listening position. To reduce this you want to keep the speakers within half the wavelength of the crossover point from eachother. The other possibility is to have a super steep slope. However most manufacturers don't design the crossovers with really steep slopes so it is best to use the former solution.

The best way to set up your speakers is to experiment before mounting them. Take some double sided tape and listen to the tweeter in different locations and mount it where it sounds the best.

I'm not sure about putting the mids where the 3" is now since the magnet on the mid is about 4" by itself.

Wait a second, I'm confused. You're getting a XXX 6.5 but planning to keep the 3"?

Why and how?

Thanks Steven, that's the kind of stuff i'm wanting to learn. I measured the distance from the mid placement and where the factory 3" is and it's 10" above the mid. That's assuming that you are supposed to measure from the edges of the speakers and not the center of them. Would this sound like crap or would this only really matter if I was competing?

Kfro1, I dont want to keep the 3" speaker, i just want to take it out and use it's spot for the tweet.
