I bought a Viper remote starter for my wife for Christmas and intended to install the unit myself in her Chevy Malibu.  I'm comfortable with car electronics (done my share of stereo installs) and restored to old cars including rewiring everything, so I was confident I could handle the project.  The install guide was a little intimidating so I decided to call best buy (where the kit came from) and they told me installation would be $150.  $50 for labor, $50 for a modulator to bypass the ignition's security features (chip in the key) and $45 for 3 extra relays not included in the kit.  Sorry for all the background but I didn't think an answer would be possible without it.  Is there away around these extra bypass/modulator? (the relays I have extras so I'm not worried about them) and more importantly, can I do this install myself or is this something beyond my skill level?  Last question, is $150 a fair price for the install? - it seemed high from what I had heard - of course I wasn't thinking in terms of $100 in extra parts.  I live in NJ in case the prices vary in different areas.

Below is the wiring diagram for your car. Think you can do it go for it and give it a try. It can also be an expensive learning experience if you are not comfortable and skill engough.   $150 is a fair price. If you feel it's too much look around and see what other shop can give you with the same price. Remember you are not paying for the labour. You are paying for what they know and that you don't have. posted_image

Thanks for the diagram.  I'm still unsure about the bypass - does the direct wire use a different schematic then the kits, bypassing the factory security built into the key?

also, please understand, I have no problem with the $50 for labor - I actually thought that was low - it's the extra parts that bothered me.  If they can wire around the security then why pay the $50 for the modulator.  If they can't wire around it then how does the diagram posted above work?  ....and $15 for each of the relays - relays are all the same and like $3-4 bucks (if not less in bulk).  I bought the product from (best buy) and and if we assume I'm paying for the service there (best buy) - don't want to come of as complaining, but why would they mark up the extra parts that much - especially when thy sold me the kit as universal- ready to be installed in any car.  I could see this if I took it to another shop that was upset I didn't buy it from them....

How does it work you ask?
Well, wire everything that is require to remote start the car. To understand how it works, I don't think I can explain it to you in one post. You must do a bit of homework first to get yourself into understanding the the basic of remote starter so that you would be able to ask the right questions in the forum. A good foundation is how concrete knowledge are build on.

Using the SEARCH botton on the top right coner is a good way to start.
How the bypass kit work on your car? I type in 555L in the search area and here are the result.
