:::background info::: i have a my HU hooked up to a Boss amp with 2
sony P5s and i drive a 99 malibu ................Ok here goes...I have
had a sony Xplode Head unit installed for over a year and everything
was going good except sometimes it would randomly turn off (no power
to it) for a day or two then just turn on while i was driving. This
happened about 4 times. I never did anything about it before because
by the time i felt motivated to see what was wrong it would turn on.
This time, that is not the case. About two weeks ago i was driving and
the HU just turned off. when i got home i started to take off the
bezel around the cd player off and it turned on. YAY! so i snapped it
back on, but within 10 minutes it turned off again. so every time it
turned off i would move the bezel to try to turn it on. this worked
for a few days and now i cant get it back on. I pulled the player out
and all of the wires are connected except the antenna. i tried putting
in the antenna and still no power. since the HU was turning on and off
i didnt think it was a problem with fuses but i briefly checked and
everything looked good. In addadition to this chaos, my odometer
sometimes turns off as i drive, but usually for less then a minute
(turns off even when not using cd player). I am very desperate. Right
now i have a portable CD player and headphones in my car :( yes i
know, its sad. any help is appreciated. xGERMx. BTW my amp isnt
getting power either

Defective head unit.  Could be a heat-related problem.  Sony Xplode head units (and amplifiers) are well known for having many different types of problems, including being prone to over heating.  If it's still under warranty, take it back for replacement.  If not, it's time for a new HU and I recomend you do not purchase Sony next time.

Cheers.

For future reference... Anytime you have a HU that is power fritzing like that, take it back immediately. EVEN if it works again. My Eclipse started doing a similar problem but it was resetting and turning back on in 5 minutes. I still made the 45 min trip to get it checked out/reset (DOH) then it did it some more and bam, new one in. Hopefully warranty still protecting it.

(When will people learn, Sony is bad... Atleast in the car.) :(

Just for the heck of it, try resetting it first. But I agree with the previous posters Sony=Junk. Good Luck

Lots of companies are downgrading their products, or so it seems. Some of the "big boys" of yesterday are just a joke now. I wish I knew why too.

Profits.  Low cost parts and assembly sourcing (ie: China, Indonesia and Korea.)  Competition from low-margin knock-off companies supported by the Chinese government.  It's also why the computer industry is going to hell.

Sony went into the toilet about the same time they introduced their "Xplode" line and stopped manufacturing in Japan and the USA.  Old Sony ES products still compete with the best available.
