Hi,

Also regarding 1987 300E Remote start car alarm

I tried finding the tach wire, at the left inner fender, and I checked the wire colours, and they do not match.  If I have a voltmeter how would I know the wire I am testing is in fact the tach wire?

Set the voltmeter to AC Volts scale.  The wire should read somewhere between 1 and 6 volts AC with the engine idling.  It will then increase as the speed of the engine increases.  Good luck to you!!

Place the RED test probe on 12 volts and pace the BLACK lead on the target wire. Then do what salb0006 suggests.

Actually, you can connect it that way or you can put the red wire on the target wire and the black on ground since AC voltage is not polarity dependant and sometimes ground is easier to find than a +12 volt source. I've done it both ways with success.
