Looking for some input here on which would be "better" in terms of sound quality, especially the mid-bass and lower. Both would be 6.5" coaxial drivers. Just wondering, if you had the choice between these two sets, which would you all buy? And why, if you would care to explain. By the way, the Polk's are an older model. Thanks.

Alpine type R i have four sets in my jeep and i never had a problem. They sound great no matter what song i am playing. I havent worked with polk's speakers that much but the speakers i used i didnt like. I would go with alpine all the way.

I have Polk MMC570 (5x7 - competition MOMO) in my doors and love them. By far the most crisp "Highs" and smooth midrange I've heard in any installation that I have done. I'm not familiar with the Polk speakers you are talking about but I will say here that Polk makes great speakers (I also have some in my home - Nice!!)

Alpine will do better with the a good amp on them. Wouldn't try them without one. The Polks would be a better match for a lesser amp or just on a new headunit. If you had asked about the Momo's, that would be a different story.

Yeah, I've got the Polk speakers now in my door locations running off of the stock head unit. They sound nice in the high range of the spectrum, but they are quite lacking in mid-bass/bass, since their natural cut-off frequency is 70 Hz. I am planning on putting 30W to them via an external Kicker amp and using an Alpine head unit (no internal amp). Will this "beef up" their sound on the low end or not?

Since the Alpines go down to around 40 Hz, this would obviously (in my mind) sound better from a low end standpoint. But will they sound as nice otherwise as the Polk's do? The 70 Hz cut-off frequency of the Polk's also limit my flexibility on the subs and where I want to set the x-over point (was planning on 80 Hz, but wouldn't mind going a little lower, maybe 70 Hz or even 60 Hz, if it worked out well enough).

Just looking for some options and whether I'm worrying over nothing. Alpine Type R vs. Polk GXR - Last Post -- posted image.

Since you already have the polks I would just go on and add the amp and see how it sounds. If you like the sound that you are getting you've got your set-up and saved some money. If you still don't like the sound you have than I would look into getting another set of 6.5's.
