Im thinking of changing around my sound system. I have 4 mtx 8000 12's in a enclosure that was made just for the mtx's. Im happy with how it sounds and I just took the jbl 1200 bp.1 amp off the subs and added the alphasonik pma 1000 DA amplifer which is 2064x 1 at one ohm. The subs are single 4 ohm subs, so I have it wired down to 1 ohm. Now I can buy some brand new Planet Audio FU18-2 subs for 200, for both. And I would have them wired down to 1 ohm also with the alphasonik amplifier with the subs having a sealed box built just for them. will I noticed a difference or am I better off staying with the mtx's which have served me well? I'd stick with the MTX's. They should be louder than 2 18's, given that there are four of them. You have 48" of cone vs 36" of cone, so i think you'll be happy with that over the Planet subs, even though they are nice. How do you like the alphasonik amp just out of curiousity? Like it as: functionality, sound quality, easy to use/install.

It actually was easy to install cause I already had the 1/0 guage cable running for the jbl amp and I was surprisded that the subs was louder. way louder actually. Not bad for a amp off ebay but I know that comapany is no joke when it comes to audio, just not to many out there. But im still loyal to jbl whats louder 4 12's or 2 18's - Last Post -- posted image.

Area of a circle is pi * r^2.

Let's do the math, shall we?

3.14 * 6^2 = 113 * 4 subs = 452 in^2 of MTX cone area MAX! It will actually be less than this since the surround isn't usable cone area.

3.14 * (let's say 8.5, just to show how wrong uthink was) ^2 = 453 in^2 of Planet Audio cone area.

Good job uthink.

Alright, now lets look at the actual usable cone area the manufacturer quotes.

MTX: 83.6in^2 x 4 = 334.4in^2

PA: 190.96in^2 x 2 = 381.92in^2

No comment.

That said, it really doesn't matter because the efficiency of the drivers are about the same. So... the MTX setup will probably be a couple db hotter because of the 4 drivers. In any event, you shoud model the system up using an enclosure modeling program like winisd and see that some estimation based on any one characteristic of the speaker is not the best idea.

I never really looked at it like that. I just always added the subs together using inches and not cone area. You made a good point their kfro1 But I think my point as been made that I should stick with the mtx's cause as the saying go if it aint broke dont fix it. Really I was just checking to see if they would beat louder but I guess just changing the amplifier really worked out. I am in no way putting down jbl amps, because for the price they are one of the best deals out there pound for pound.

I would try the 18's. I had 2 Kicker 18's a long time ago and I've never had anything close to that sound since. If not for wanting the rear seat back I would still have the 18's. Just out of curiousity, where can you get Planet Audio 18's for $200 for both?

Many things play a factor in the common question, "which subs would get louder". Displacement, xmax,Sd can all play a role in which setup would get louder, however..like many setups the box will make or break it.
