I just had my new 200 amp alternator installed (97 Ford Explorer) at a local shop, but they said the upgraded 4 gauge cable was not necessary. Were they lying, and if so, how much of a difference would it make?

it will make a big difference, i would use 0guage, but 4 will

Lemme ask you this - what size wire is required to carry 200 amps? Then you need to have a wire AT LEAST that big. If you don't, you do run the risk of overheating your primary wire, and causing a fire, performance be damned! DO NOT SKIP THIS STEP... upgrade the wire. A #2 is rated for 225A, so this is the smallest I would go.

2 guage is kinda hard to find tho, 0 guage is more common, and will have a higher power handleing.
