this head unit has a loudness feature when you go to the menu screen. It increases the bass a whole lot but the way the bass sounds is kinda weird. I cant even turn it up half as high with it on without distorting and I was just wondering If it is even safe to use it.

loud sucks and generally just adds distortion. using factory 6x9's sometimes it helps but if you speakers that are anygood at all then I would turn it off and just turn the volume up
double-secret reverse-osmosis speaker-cone-induced high-level interference distortion, Its a killer

The "LOUD" Feature is fine to use, if you're that bass hungry... However, I wouldn't really use it unless you have subwoofers. In this case, the distortion disappears, as the bass signal is only sent to the woofers, and not to the speakers (if you set up your crossovers correctly).
Otherwise, stick to the XPLOD EQ mode, if your HU has it...
