I was wondering if anyone had any experiance with 5.1 I've always wanted it for my car but never got around to it. Any recommendations on what to get and where to get it?

They have add-on 5.1 channel surround processors you can add to your head unit but it isn't cheap. I think its around $500 for the processor. You would be better off getting a head unit with the processor built in I think. I have heard it sounds incredible and the difference is amazing, but I haven't personally heard one against the other. I think any shop would  be able to get the processor or direct you to a head unit with the processor built in.

I have a Pioneer 5.1 processor in my car, I forget the model number, maybe deq-p7000? Newer processors have Dolby Pro Logic II, which allows you to turn any 2 channel stereo signal into a 5.1 signal. The main reason I got it was because I have a Pioneer DVH-P5000MP, which is able to play DVDs, and I wanted to take advantage of the DTS and Dolby Surround audio. A couple questions for you.
What do you exactly want 5.1 for?
What head unit do you currently have, and are you going/willing to switch it out?
Will you be mounting a center channel speaker?

Maybe it's just me, I've only heard two 5.1 setups in cars, but it really doesn't seem worth the money in a car. The soundstage for 5.1 and for good car audio is so different, that you almost need two systems to have them both and make them both sound good. Maybe I just haven't heard it done right though.

I really just want the 5.1 for the listening quality I don't plan on watching any movies just yet. I have the alpine 7897 the phantom face deal. And I'd be willing to swap it, I'd miss it though! That thing sounds awesome. And I plan on putting a center channel.

Keep with the alpine theme and pick up their 5.1 Amplifier the MRD-D550, the good thing about it is that it dosn't make you stick with a tiny sub output, , it gives you a 4 volt rca output so you can put any sub amp into the chain and keep the 5.1 experience. You need optical inputs tho, ,i can't remember if your deck has optical outs?

The other option would be to opt for the  PXA-H700.
