Bonding FG to foam-backed vinyl

When I search I keep finding information on bonding fiberglass to plastic, but what I am trying to do is essentially make a fiberglass cap that I would like to adhere to the foam-backed vinyl padded dash section in my car (a 1st generation talon/eclipse/laser for those familiar with them). The dashes on these cars always peel up from the stamped steel backing plate and I really don't like how the lines flow. I was thinking that I would glue the padded vinyl back down to get the propper shape, was the hell out of the vinyl so the resin doesn't stick to it, and then make an overlay to work from. After that I would do the modifications to the cap and then adhere that to the vinyl as a solid overlay. Another way I was thinking of doing it was to make a mold of the piece and then make a casting, strip off all the foam-backed vinyl, and then mold the new fiberglass cover directly to the metal frame and use expanding foam to make a composite structure that doesn't lose it's shape. I'm sorry if I am not explaining it clearly, from what I understand it is a fairly odd idea and I'm not too good at taking visual ideas and turning them into words :)

I'm pretty sure I understand what you are talking about. If you wanted to do the "cap" thing I would say you can adhere it with just about anything, i.e. good double-sided tape, that 3M Super 77, Liquid Nail, etc. Although I think you would have a better result taking the dash out of the car and making a mold. Then create an entirely new dash to replace the old one. It usually proves pretty difficult making everything match up when making a "cap." Just my opinion.Nothing is impossible!

most people recomend just pulling the vynal off and getting down to the plastic or metal, and build it up from there to match everything else, you have all sorts of problems with expansion and cracking if you do a little fg on foam backed vynal, we've had plenty of discusions about this on here, Bad Boys Customs
