Has anyone tried putting some type of push switches in every gear of a manual transmission that will open the circuit if the car is in any gear?  So whenever the circuit is open the remote start will not work.  I think the viper 719 XV has a switch that has to be in the on position for the remote start to work.  You can connect six push button switched in series to a 5-speed stick shift (one in each gear/stick position).  Most manual transmissions have some spring action that retracts the stick to the center if not in gear right.

How hard would it be to put these switches around the stick shifter? Impossible?  What type of push buttons would be used?  Is it possible to put a switch to sense when the stick is in neutral?

It's not worth the risks and would only take one incident (accident) for you or anyone not convinced to realize this. If you must install a remote start in a vehicle with a manual transmission, purchase one designed to work in a vehicle with a manual transmission.

The way the R/S designed for manuals work is by keeping the engine on until you shut the door right.  What if you go to a gas station and your little kids puts it in gear and you're lazy enough not to put the key in the ignition and start it with the control outside the car.  Nothing is completely safe right.

I guess you could also devise a way using laser sensors of some sort.  A lazer that travels in a really straight light; two receivers on one door and two signals on the opposing door, and if the signals is obstructed by the shift knob it will not receive the signal this dissabling the R/S.  This one sounds safer if you could make the lazers reliable and safe.

I'm just imagining different possibilities and I was wondering what else you guys think

Depending on the make and model of car, some cars have a neutral position indicator switch already in the transmission.

I wasn't talking about that accident happening on a jerry riged alarm, I was talking about the ones they sell.  I guess I need to read up on their safety mechanisms but from what I've read in these post this accident does seem possible if you do not posses as much common sense as some of us do.  I really don't think I personally need a R/S but it would be nice to find or invent a safe one that's actually reliable and safe.

Do you guys know were I can read more about these.  I guess I can just search the post.
