Over the last week the face on my deck has been crapping out. It would only light up when the face was in the "CD open" position; not the closed position like normal decks (like it used to). Now, it doesn't light up at all. It still turns off when rotated backward, and plays music when it should. All of the buttons still work (except the track change buttons are starting to work intermitedly also). I figured that the contacts to the deck are getting weak, so I tried cleaning them with steel wool, with no luck. Any suggestions? The deck is a Kenwood KDC-516S.

If it was me I would  use an electronic bath spray and rub with somthing a little less abrasive.[q-tip]  don't spray  it on it  though only safe on some plastics . I've used this spray called safty wash cleaner& degreaser made by m.g. chemicals on every thing from home electronics [circuit boards] to electric guitar pods. Hasen't  damaged any thing I used it on.

The common problem on the old Kenwoods was the internal ribbon cable.

Unfortunately, this morning it decided not to power up at all, as if the face wasn't even there. It the ribbon somethin I can fix with a new part or is it just trash? I'll try cleaning it again with a chemical and Q-tip, but the contacts don't really look dirty or corroded/rusted.

It's up to you whether you want to try it or not.  You'd have to find a donor Kenwood, though, and you won't know if the problem's fixed until after you try it.

Screw it. Sounds easier to just buy a new deck. It's due anyways. Thanks!
