this is rather funny. You have people saying HiFonics bad, Kenwood good. Or Fosgate. Or whatever brand you wanna throw out. Outside of features and honesty of rating, there isnt going to be dramatic differances in amp outside of what is writen. I have ran the ZR series amps from Kicker for a long time, which is well know for great SQ, and went to HiFonics. No noticable differance in SQ. If there was, and if i were using the same speakers, i would assume a check in H/U would make a bigger diff. on SQ.
Honestly, if you can hear a noticable differance between the majority of these amplifiers, id like whoever claims it to prove it.
Running a high-wattage HiFonics amp would be perfectly fine. Just dont get greedy with gains. I run my Oz Audio Matrix series components off of a Hifonics ZX4000 (100x2 @ 4 ohm RMS). It does the job, but i only wish i had more power (as these are rated 150 watts RMS). Eventualy, ill figure a way to fit it all together (had a ZX6000 origionaly, but couldnt fit it in the tight spot i had, so i downgraded to the ZX4000 and kinda regret it)
