IMHO, usually if you have to ask how to test wires, it is best to seek out a professional for the job.

That Caravan is not the easiest vehicle to work on and would be a PIA for a first time learning experience. 

I have seen so many DIY alams/RS come into my shop that only half worked because ppl were frustrated and gave up/or couldn't figure everything out.  A full working RS/alarm is better than saving $100 and having a half assed fire hazard under the dash.
