i am doing a blow through sub box on a 88 x-cab s-10. i need to decide on some subs. i am not sure which ones hit better. i want to hit a spl of 130+ . the subs i am looking at are the soundstream splx-122 its built for extreme spl with a burst point of 2200 watts. the other sub is the kicker S12L72 dual 2 ohms wired down to one ohm. kicker reps have told me two of these in a blow through will work. but you know the company wants money. i know the kicker decibel specs say 89 and the splx-122 says its decibel spec is 98. i know this doesn't come into play in spl. i am going to probably use a hifonics bx1605d or tx1500d amp. so i know these amps will do 1 ohm. any info will help

I would think that you should easly be able to hit 130+. I don't use any of these subs, but if thats your only two choices I would pick the kickers. Also I'm not a fan of Hifonics amps. I feel that thay are very miss leading. A 1500W amp for $300? I have had many kids come in w/ these amps and thay never measure what thay claim. So you should just do some research. Maybe someone else will have a diff. opinion on these amps as well.

I would guess that with a well built, ported enclosure Two decent 12's with around 1000-1200w you should be able to hit 141-143. Good luck!

i work for internet audio company so i get all my stuff at cost. those 300 dollar amps cost me like 180. what type of amp would you suggest a xenon, phoenix digital any in mind. kicker amps are to expensive at my cost. and audiobahn is overrated.

well with that said buy Two Hifonics amps one on each sub. If you want to run them @ 1ohm, then buy Two 2ohm D.V.C. subs. This should sound great.

i think if those are your two sub choices go soundstream and 1 ? are you open to more than just 12"s if you went with the 15" splx s and went with a soundstream 2000 D amp you would hit over 140 db if your eletrical system is strong enough thats just what i think

i checked on the splx subs they can be ordered with a quad 2 ohm coil setup that would make you able to get a 1 ohm load on your amp with the 2000 D sound stream amp that could get you 1000 rms to each sub i was considering putting the same setup in a honda CRX for spl comps soundstream also has 5 20 and 40 fared caps

Wow, I think I just read the most misleading info i've come across in one thread in a while. 130db's can be attained VERY easily if you know what you're doing. You don't need tons of power to reach it either. Get a Kicker CVR or Alpine Type R for around $150-200 and throw 500-700w rms at it in a proper ported box and call it a day. Hell a 140 can be attained with that setup right there with the right amount of testing and knowledge. Hifonics amps are pretty good for SPL setups, especially the new ones they came out with. I'd do a single 15" Alpine Type R (2005) in around 3.5-4 cubes tuned to approx. 40 hz and call it a day. If you want you could get the Dual 2ohm config. and run the BX1000D @1ohm and give the Type R plenty of power.

i'm not trying to misleading i agree with audiobass10 130 db can be attained with 1 12" sub and 500rms i take it your an alpine fan i like alpine myself i think the hifonics amps are good amps he could use one of those amps and some shhh 12" subs and hit 130 db i think the 1 15" sub is a good idea the ? is does he want to compete or just turn some heads

Actually those numbers ABSOLUTELY DO come into play... Those numbers tell you your reference point for one woofer with one watt driving it... What do you think SPL *IS*???

To get to 130dB, with one woofer, let's do the math, shall we? (and we're just rounding UP for simplicity's sake, OK?)

130-89=41

41/3=14

14 doublings from one watt equals 16384 WATTS!!!

130-98=32

32/3=11

11 doublings from one watt equals 2048 WATTS!!!

The more efficient woofer (the one rated 98) will use 1 EIGHTH the power to make the same output! Granted those numbers will change once you put them in a cabin, and add the enclosure geometries, but it all remains to be seen that the woofer rated 89dB will STILL require 8 times the POWER to get to the same output... This, I want to say, is an EXTREME OVERSIMPLIFICATION, but the math is sound and appropriate... For the guy trying to build an SPL system (and I can't see why, but there are some that do) the "Reference Efficiency" is the MOST important number to look at.
