Brake Light/Turn Signal Circuit

I'm finished rewiring a 1950 Ford except for the brake lights and turn signals. 1950 Fords did not come equipped with a turn signal switch and because this is a custom, I want to use a dash switch instead of the large clunky strap on you often see on these old cars.

I am using a Painless wire kit and a DPDT switch. The rear lights are single bulb/double filiment (1157). I split the brake wire  and added a diode  to each side and wired to each rear turnsignal. I have brake lights and turn signals but the brake lights cancel the turn signals. Can anyone provide a diagram showing how to wire this so it works the way it is supposed to???

Your problem can easily be fixed by installing a relay to have the turn signal power source overide the brake light signal.

I could sketch up a diagram for you, but I would need more info on how your DPDT turn signal switch is wired.  Does your turn signal system use one or two normal 552 flasher cans? I would also need to know how the DPDT switch is wired.
