poor AM reception

2001 panasonic deck- great fm reception, but very poor am reception, is it the install, or the HU?its in a 2001 hyundai accent. thank you

Check antenna ground - makes big difference for AM

plug another antenna into the unit and give it a listen...... AM reception is critical to a good antenna source, whereas you'll pick up FM without an antenna even plugged in in many cases ( it'll picket fence a bit, but you'll get reception)

thats not to say it may not be a problem in the tuner front end of the radio, just not as likely... easy quick test is just to plug in a test antenna you buy for 10 bucks... if it works good with the test antenna, you have an antenna problem on the vehicle, if it doesnt, you've likely got a bum front end in the HU.....

chassis ground your radio as well as using the ground in your harness. this may help
paint and body
