I'm looking for a decent multimeter; nothing fancy, but one that will cover what I need for car audio and last a long time. Anyone know of one that doesn't cost more than $20 or $30?

radio shack has nice pocket meters for 15$

I'd suggest the radio shack 22-813.. 29 range digital multimeter.. $30.

Also check your local Lowes / Home Depot.. they carry meters. Do try to get the best meter you can buy though.. much of my meter equipment is over 10 years old..

This one does more than what you need for car audio.

I thought I'd splash out on a real expensive set of 'FLUKE' probes for my mutli-meter

a few weeks after I started noticeing problems when trying to find feeds,

I started fiddleing with the cables & noticed when bending in a certain way they'd show open circuit! i cut the leads open to find they are is no continuity form lead to probe? they are not permenantly joined they are simply interlaced / laid on top of each other!

I changed them for a cheap set which im still using NOW.

Sears also has cheap multimeters.

Don't know whats around ya'll, but a tool store called Harbor Freight has little cheap ones for 3 bucks. I bought a bunch and keep them in all the trucks to make quick on the road diagnostics. Course, they don't compare real well with my Fluke...
