I currently found out the Bose system in my 2002 Audi A4 has an 8 inch sub woofer mounted on the rear shelf of the car. The bass is okay, but Im wondering if there is anything stronger I could get. So far, the two subs I'm looking at are from JBL and Infinity (both Harman Kardon companies). Besides those two, does anyone else have any suggestion for a good 8 inch sub?

I believe it would be free air since it would be mounting directly onto the shelf behind the seats. As for wattage, no limits.

You need to make sure you get a sub designed for free air use. Other than that I have no suggestions as I've never been too keen on free air.

ok, i have an idea. Now under your shelf the audi will hav a metal post going horizontal for car support. Now make a very small sub box. what you can do is make the box very small in height but make the other depth and width dimensions similar to those of the size of the shelf. so say if your trubk is 45" wide. what you need to do is make a box 42wide and say the height of the woofer is about 4" so make the box around 4.5" tall. now the depth can be taken from measuring the length of the shelf. this gives you your third dimension. ok now to secure the box you could use the horizontal car support to mount it to. now the box can be made out of mdf but the part that is facing the shelf might have to be fibreglass because of the little things that will get in the way of a flat peice of MDF. so there it is. sum shallow subs are the new jbl grand touring.
