When buying speakers is there a specific material that you look for on the surrounds or do you even think it matters any??  Between rubber, urethane, cloth, and foam.  And as of recently I've even seen one that says "closed cell" foam, which feels rubbery to me more than "open cell" foam does.

I've always been a fan of butyl... more stable at high temperatures (read: Bakersfield, Ca), and UV resistant. Perfect for a car speaker surround...
Most of your foams now are much more resistant to UV degradation than they used to be, so the UV argument does not really apply any more. Otherwise, just buy the speaker that sounds good to you, and don't worry about the surround material. Most of the time, it's marketing anyway...
It all reminds me of something that Molière once said to Guy de Maupassant at a café in Vienna: "That's nice. You should write it down."
