Torrance, Calif. —

Eclipse, a high-end car audio brand that is sold only through retail specialists, said it is expanding into Crutchfield in order to satisfy demand for Eclipse’s new audio/video/navigation products.

Eclipse will sell only its AVN line of A/V-navigation products through the catalog and its Web site.

“We are the last major head-unit brand to go with them,” said Eclipse’s marketing director Michael West.

West said that the Eclipse’s AVN units are now outselling its standard CD players due to the growing popularity of the video-plus-navigation category.

Yup, nothing like seeing a line head down the crapper. A good solid line like Eclipse built on the backs of hard working indipendent dealers like me. Now my competition (the bix box butcher) across the street sells a cd player that we carry. Normally we make about $90.00 on it. Except now that the competition has free install (value is $45.00) on it every now and then, oh and free speakers (value is $50.00), so sure it is a great deal for the customer but for the hard working guys like me that built the line, it is a total slap in the face. Hard to stay in business when the competition is forcing you to match their price and sell a cd player for $5.00 over cost.

Eclipse as good as the line is has become just another line. They have sold out the guys that built the line for them to the guys that can move more boxes. Business sure, but a total slap in the face at the same time. Nothing like a manufacturer and reps lying to you for years upon years all the time knowing that they had alterior motives.

<yes I am more than pissed at Eclipse>

Top Secret, I can tell you but then my wife will kill me.

Well, I have probably purchased my LAST Eclipse gear... Anybody got some good old-school Nakamichi for sale? Or perhaps some Zapco for cheap? Eclipse Enters Crutchfield -- posted image.
As far as I am concerned, Eclipse is dead to me.
I agree Rob, good gear, no, EXCELLENT gear, and many years of blood, sweat, and tears in it from MANY mom-n-pop shops. I used to work for one of those VERY SAME mon-n-pop shops, back when Eclipse was a Noboby Company, and I feel I helped you put them where they are today... Yep, a big ol' wet-hand slap in the face...
Are you LISTENING, Fujitsu Ten, et al? Sell-out LOSERS! I hope you ALL end up in the bargain bins with RF and Aldiobahnpinecoustic!
It all reminds me of something that Molière once said to Guy de Maupassant at a café in Vienna: "That's nice. You should write it down."

I understand the angst y'all have here, but think of Eclipse for a second.  Maybe this is the only way they could keep the product line competitive with the other manufacturers.  Let's face it, as ugly as it may be, we're becoming a big box society (or internet-based) & the mom & pop's, while we love them, are on borrowed time.  The manufacturers have to adjust the same way the retailers do.

An ugly piece of reality IMO.  And I'll mourn Eclipse's passing too.

They are cutting our balls off. I can't compete with the big box bozos. Remember when there could only be 1 RF dealer in an area. those days are long gone. who's next to sell out the back bone of the car audio biz?

JL within the next 3 years I guarantee it
Its the natural order of progression, its now all about quanity...quality died many years ago
It does suck for small shops, but now small shops like my perosnal distributor will adjust and instead of making a profit, he'll settle with just breaking even
I know everyones pissed about the way the industry is heading, I just don't see it changing
This is happing in my industry Computers, I lost my company  because i just could not make any money off of it, so its back to 9-5 for me for the last 5 years
Good luck to all you out there with shops

Just to play the devil's advocate here...
Yes, how they are screwing over the mom and pop's shops sucks, but look at it in Eclipse's standpoint as well. You guys are arguing that you won't make but $5 profit off a HU sale now. You're looking out for your companies (not a bad thing at all). Eclipse is doing the same thing by looking out for their company. They are going to sell more units by having the way to distribute their products to more people, which means more sales and more money for them. I don't see how you guys can complain when Eclipse is trying to do the same thing you are, make money.
On a second note, the precedent has been set that when a product line goes from mom and pop stores to Circuit City or Best Buy the quality goes down. However, whats not to say these guys can't break the mold. What if more sales and more money for Eclipse won't give them more money for research and other things to make their products even better?
Just some things to think about here..

No business can survive for very long doing this.  "Just breaking even" is called "bankruptcy."
