It is the 7909 with the black chassis & 4 volt preouts ( copper chassis & 6-8 volt on the newer model ). It's an audiophile's dream to get this in their vehicle . If you had one, you probably still have it in a vehicle or keeping it because you feel bad for selling a deck that cost you $ 1500.00 back in the day.

You ask  " what's the difference ?" ......... accurate reproduction is our primary goal for a competition audio system. All the units you audition for your car have certain requirements that must be met to be considered for your system. The list is as follows:

Ease of use. A deck with too many menu's or modes is difficult to learn and operate. Stick with simple controls
Good Specs. You can try and compare head units by the numbers, but it won't be easy.
Reliability. You need to know that your investment is going to last for along time
The biggest differences I have ever come across between similarly priced equipment have been in speakers and head units.( taken from ofsoundmind)

This deck rivals the Alpine F1 Status deck ( the 7990 ) .You can read this review made by this person here: http://www.carreview.com/cat/car-audio/cd-receivers/alpine/PRD_97324_2861crx.aspx#reviews

I have one as well in our show car and it's worth it to get this deck if you want high SQ & just like when the 7909 came out as well, it was worth it back then. All in all, the 7909 reproduces the music better than most of the highest end HU today & the 7909 came out in in the early 90's.

i have my CDA-9815 its just awesome 3 4v preout, 27rms x 4, time correction, 6band eq, crossover, 2-way or 3-way system, 180 phase inverter for sub, quick search for songs, the MX,

and it so easy to use, even the new models (9835 & 9855) are no match in ease of use

the quality of the sound is awesome too and the cd player never skips(maybe when jumping 2feet in the air lol ;) )

it is my little baby but there is one that is even greater to me is the cda-7998 with phantom face and graphics!!! i tried many time on ebay to obtain one but i always get outbid at the last moment :( loll

i think that alpine makes ease of use units maybe the best in this category.

after that there is the panasonic 7700 dvd player with the graphical interface it is just too cool :)
