I want to know if I can use a transistor to operate a siren instead of a relay.  Can someone provide me with a quick instruction on how transistors work?

Sorry, but what exactly do you want to do? Are you trying to add another siren to your alarm system?
Be careful whose advice you buy, but be patient with those who supply it.Transistor instead of relay -- posted image.

It's not an alarm i'm installing, it's a GPS tracking device which has various other inputs/outputs for monitoring things on vehicles (such as seatbelt use, overspeed detection, PTO sensor, etc.).  There is a safety application I am working on which activates a siren.  I guess it would be a similar application to a horn honk on one of those 3Watt phone booster kits.
