depends on the antenna it gets shipped with..... HX, XHF, XR, etc

It's the 543HF, well at least that's what I am sticking on it...

HF was their worst antenna.... expect about 400-600 ft range

Is there another anntenna that you would recommend?  And would I need to replace the remote to work with the anntenna?

nope all the antennas are interchangeable (until you get into the 2 way units)   XHF Plus and XR are the ones to look for
